A MESSAGE FROM OFFICER STROH

Summer is finally here! It has been a while since my last post and it was mostly in reference to Winter related issues and introduction. Since the weather has been progressively more pleasant, we now are forced as motorists to share the road with all the other forms of transportation and recreation that present themselves during this time frame. Since we all need to share the road we need to take due care and caution for each other. This mutual respect will not only foster a safe environment to travel the roadways of this beautiful peninsula but will also help to alleviate “road rage” and other negative effects.

For the motorists on the roadways, if possible give the bicyclists, runners and the like a wide berth to allow for any unusual actions. Likewise as bicyclists, runners and the like BE aware of your surroundings. I urge and remind each of the bicyclists and pedestrian traffic to do the following:

· Stay as far to the right side of the roadway as possible.

· Ride no more than two abreast; if possible as a courteous to others ride single file unless over taking another bike.

· Obey ALL traffic laws; this includes stop signs and the like.

· If you are riding as a group and you see a large group of cars backing up behind you, move over more or allow them the opportunity to pass. This will alleviate some of the anger that builds with some less patient motorists.

Again I stress the “Golden Rule” use mutual respect and treat others how you wish to be treated. Refrain from flipping each other off or using fowl language, act as respectable adults. It works both ways. For motorists if you have problems with groups of cyclists, call the Cherry Capital Cycling Club and try to get the best description possible along with day and time. For cyclists if someone is out of control then we need a plate, vehicle description and driver description. I will issue citations to any cyclist or motorists that violate state laws. If you wish to file a complaint then you will have to appear in court to represent what was observed to be a violation.

Lastly, dogs. Again it is a GT County ordnance and you are required to have your dog on a leash, period. If you are in a park or on the roadways, the dog needs to have a leash attached securely to it.

Enjoy the summer and be respectful to each other on the roadways, I will do my best to keep them well patrolled and safe. Thank you and if you have any questions feel free to contact me.
